The Danger of Unregistered Gas Engineers

Every year in the UK, hundreds of people are injured or killed as a result of unsafe gas work carried out by unregistered traders. Carbon monoxide poisoning, gas explosions and fires caused by illegal or substandard gas work represent a very real danger to London tenants and homeowners. Under UK law, only Gas Safe registered engineers are legally permitted to work on gas appliances. Using an unregistered trader is not only dangerous — it is illegal, and could result in criminal prosecution, massive fines, and the invalidation of your property insurance.

Red Flags to Watch Out For

Rogue gas traders typically display one or more of the following warning signs:

If they cannot produce this, refuse entry.

Unsolicited cold-calling — legitimate engineers do not cold-call at the door offering gas safety checks or boiler services at suspiciously low prices

Unusually low prices — if a quote seems too good to be true, it probably is. Very low prices often indicate unlicensed work

Pressure tactics — a rogue trader may tell you your appliance is "dangerous" and must be replaced immediately, pressuring you to spend money on unnecessary work

No written quote — legitimate engineers always provide a written quote or invoice before starting work

Cash only payment — insisting on cash with no receipt is a major red flag

How to Verify a Gas Safe Engineer

Before allowing any engineer to work on gas appliances in your property, verify their credentials:

Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card — check the engineer's name, photo and the list of appliances they are qualified to work on matches the work you need done

Check the card's expiry date — Gas Safe licences are renewed annually. An expired card is not valid.

Check the hologram — the Gas Safe ID card has an up-to-date hologram. Be suspicious of any card without a current hologram.
